I Have a 1997 Kawasaki Prairie 400 4x4. The Atv turns on perfectly, but when put on drive and hitting the throttle hard to take off, the quad makes an loud sound (like it's hitting metal) and does not advance. When hitting the throttle slow, the quad advances with no problem. When putting it on reverse, it goes with no problems.My 97 prairie 400 wouldnt shift in to high gear all of a sudden. The needle seat has a small screen and it was plugged only letting a small amout of fuel into the bowl. Most of the jets were clear but I still used music wire and air to clear any blockages.Without these three requirements, the engine won’t start and continue to run. The fan switch is in the radiator, so it does not get hot enough to kick on when the thermostat is stuck shut. Given the age, I would suggest checking the coolant circulation after a new thermostat is installed.
